Yes, I ate bread and tea almost every morning — and still lost weight. Here’s how I made it work for my Nigerian weight loss journey.

When I decided to lose weight, I weighed 96.7kg. Like most people, I thought I’d have to completely give up foods I love — especially bread and tea, which are staples in many Nigerian homes. But I discovered that with the right portion control and consistency, I didn’t need to cut them out. I simply had to be smarter about how I ate them.
This blog post is for any Nigerian who loves bread and tea but also wants to shed weight. Here’s how I made it work — and how you can too.
My Weight Loss Bread and Tea Combo
For most mornings, my breakfast looked like this:
- 150g – 180g of soft bread (usually Agege bread or sliced), 400 kcal
- A regular-sized cup of tea or coffee
- Milk: I used about 68.5 kcal worth of milk (measured)
- Sugar: Just 1 teaspoon (16 kcal)
Total calorie count is: 400 + 68.5 + 16 = 484.5 kcal
Why I Could Eat Bread and Tea and Still Lose Weight
- I Tracked My Calories: Bread can be calorie-dense, but once I started measuring what I ate, I realised I could still stay under my daily calorie goals.
- I balanced the Rest of My Day: If I had bread in the morning, I avoided heavy carbs in the evening. I paired my lunch and dinner with veggies, grilled proteins, and light oils.
- I didn’t snack after Breakfast: Bread and tea kept me full till lunch. That helped me avoid unnecessary snacking, which greatly helped my calorie deficit.
- I eat breakfast at 10am: Delaying my breakfast till 10am greatly helped me stay full till lunch. So that eliminated any form of snacking.
- I Stayed Consistent: Even on days I couldn’t go to the gym, I stayed consistent with my meal portions — and the results showed.
My Weight Loss Result Eating Bread And Tea
Within my first few weeks, I started to see the scale move. From 96.7kg to 94.5kg, I lost over 2kg while still enjoying my bread and tea mornings.
This wasn’t a magic fix — just a realistic approach that worked because it was sustainable for me.
